A "5" Could Make Me Lose Control!

An activity-based method for evaluating and supporting highly anxious students

This hands-on activity helps students who are highly anxious cope with their stress by classifying social and emotional information and analyzing how best to act.

How Does It Work?

1. Introduce the stressor scale (points 1 - 5).
  • I can handle this.
  • This might make me feel uncomfortable.
  • This could make me really nervous.
  • This can make me MAD!
  • This can make me lose control!
2. Instruct students to sort stressor cards and read them aloud, one at a time.
3. Let the student put it in the appropriate pocket that best describes the level of stress he/she might feel in the given situation.
4. Ask the student to explain why he/she placed the card in that slot as they think about emotions like anxiety, sadness and anger.

Includes picture word cards making the activity suitable for younger children and for those with communication challenges.

The kit also includes suggestions for how to include the process as a part of an effective behavior assessment and a problem-solving activity.

This interactive way of using the 5-point scale offers a very concrete way of helping children, particularly those with autism spectrum disorders, to understand and control their emotional responses.
