Let's Talk About Dying Cards (For Professional Use)

Helping Professionals to Communicate with Family Members

Communicating with relatives when a patient is terminally ill can be a difficult task for professionals to contemplate. However, it is a crucially important part of their role that needs to be undertaken with confidence and competence.

This resource can be used in two ways: 1 as a TRAINING resource for professionals; 2 as a resource when WORKING DIRECTLY with children of dying parents and/or adult relatives. Within the pack there are two sets comprising of twenty cards each. One set has been designed for use with adults and the other for work with children. A booklet is included with directions and ideas for using the cards as a training resource both individually and in groups. Also included are directions and ideas for using the cards for direct work with children/relatives.

This training resource has two objectives:
  • It helps group members recognize and acknowledge the importance of inter-professional working and communication when working with family members experiencing bereavement.
  • It helps to facilitate discussions between the group members about communicating with and working with family members when a significant person is at the end of life.
This resource has been developed for use with practitioners from different professions. It is specifically targeted at nursing and medical staff, social workers, family support workers and counselors; and especially for staff working with children who are living with a parent who is dying. The resource was also designed for DIRECT WORK with children whose parents/caregivers have a terminal illness or with adult relatives of dying patients.
